Risk Management Traveling Platform For a US Startup

Risk Management Traveling Platform For a US Startup

How building a traveling app with real-time monitoring and analysis of potential threats in any given area enabled a US-founded startup to take the international market by storm, with one hundred thousand active users worldwide downloading the app in the first post-rollout month.

Challenge

The company’s current portfolio consists of web client and mobile apps for iOS and Android, while a more complex and functional version of the platform for corporate travel managers is being currently developed.

The main goal of the project was to build a functional backend and a web application, as well as a mobile app with a simple, user-friendly UI. Data exchange speed and security were the key requirements for the app since it would need to quickly update maps and enable users to download threat updates, even in remote areas over slow mobile connections.

Solution

Due to the innovative nature of the product, it was initially assumed that many of its aspects would be designed and formalized in parallel with the development process, which made *instinctools recommend Scrum for flexibility and optimal performance.

The use of the agile approach enabled the company to quickly start developing the skeleton of the future solution and to add extra details and features in subsequent iterations.

The mobile clients were built using Angular 2, Ionic 2, and Typescript. The desktop-based management dashboard for Windows and Mac was based on the cross-platform Electrons.js framework – the same framework that was used for developing the desktop version of Slack. In addition, a special Windows service was developed to enable the product to send push notifications to mobile devices.

The solution with all of its components heavily relies on a RESTful API, which ensures future scalability, reliability, modifiability and portability.

Result

Several months of hard work resulted in a successful release of the first version of the product, an online service based on a unique concept and possessing a number of outstanding characteristics. The service provides recreational and professional travelers with a reliable source of trustworthy information about threat levels at any global location and helps them travel with confidence about their safety. This partnership was a gratifying experience for *instinctools and its customer. Not only has the team delivered a powerful and functional solution, but it has also established a friendly relationship with the customer. Thanks to the team’s valuable input, the solution included multiple new features that were not part of the original specification.

Scalability

Real-time updates about emergencies, crime-related or potentially life-threatening situations that may take place or have taken place at a particular location

Tracking of the movement of people and/or their property

Plotting of the safest routes

Tips about local culture

Direct communication with service members and growth of the network of contacts

Near-instant updates about crises arising in the user’s destination area

Apartment Renting App For an Accommodation Startup

Apartment Renting App For an Accommodation Startup

How creating a feature-rich web application for apartment owners, connected through a friend, allowed an accommodation startup from Southwest Asia to carve out a unique niche in the highly competitive market of rental housing apps.

How the idea was born?

“Live in your Friend’s Home as in your Own”

FriendsWhoLend lies the concept of “sharing” with friends.

Many people have a second (or third) apartment/home that is rarely used. The owners are happy to have their friends stay there, but are not comfortable with having complete strangers renting it out. The fear is that strangers will not treat it with the same care as they would if it were their own.

With FriendsWhoLend, the property owners will be sure that members of the community will treat their properties as their own as each member has their own property invested, and these are friends or friends of friends…

As it was already mentioned, a group is formed between friends and friends-of-friends thus creating a so-called ‘closed’ community. Each member of this community contributes access to their properties and, in exchange, they are granted with the access to other properties in the FriendsWhoLend network.

There is no cost to join, and all properties are considered to be equal in terms of value. These properties are “lent” for use by members of the community through an automated calendaring function, stored in the FriendsWhoLend community.

Benefits

All users (property owners) will know each other, or be connected through a friend.
New users will be recommended into the group by an existing FriendsWhoLend member and after founders approve.

Owners take the time to ensure easy-to-use instructions
for all things like home theater, Sonos, most appliances, internet, as well as ensuring instructions for all basic appliances are available.

Property is available at least 2 months in-season (primary), and 6 months overall each year.

There is no limit to usage by a Friend (FWL member)
As long as properties are available, they can be used. Only FriendsWhoLend members can use properties. A FriendsWhoLend member can bring another couple or family members. The owner will determine the capacity (beds / people). FriendsWhoLend members should respect this – just like friends would.

Insurance will be up-to-date on all large items
(home, cars/boats if applicable, etc). Its fine to exclude the use of some contents, please outline them and make it clear upfront (ie. Grandma’s dishes, an antique boat, or the Cuban cigars there for the once a year treat.) . Use the same criteria you would if a close friend were using the property. If you drink the wine, or eat the tunafish, just replace it like you would normally

A bonded cleaning company is secured
The guest will pay for the cleaning (and laundry) to be done when the guest leaves. Cleaning service will update the owner and leave a record of the service.

All properties are of equal value
There is no “value” attributes assigned to the property

If something is broken, the guest agrees to replace it(of equal value)
User lets the owner know, just like a friend would. If it was just old or defective, the owner will replace the item. All agree to communicate.

Main Objectives

The main objectives that should be reached:

  • To let property owners lend their own properties
  • Personalized decoration with images, drawings and text

Students-Targeted Platform For an EdTech Startup

Students-Targeted Platform For an EdTech Startup

How implementing visualizations into an educational platform and honing its UX allowed an EdTech startup to experience an 11% boost in newly registered users.

Challenge

The customer contacted *instinctools while looking for a contractor to help them implement several new features to their platform based on ExpressionEngine. Due to the startup nature of the project, cost was a major factor. The cost/quality ratio offered by *instinctools turned out to be the best among all of the other competitors.

The customer hired a senior PHP developer to work on a number of challenging data visualization tasks.

The goal of the project was to modify the platform and to add a number of useful features to the existing functionality.

Solution

The problem was solved by the creation of complex charts for visualizing the relationship between admission success and various parameters:

  • Test results
  • Number of unique words in the application essay
  • Selected major

Charts were built using the D3 JavaScript library. However, the key challenge behind this task was to calculate the number of unique words. This required the use of the phpMorphy library for lemmatization.

Key Features

All of the necessary features were successfully implemented to the platform including:

An adaptive user form completion wizard comprised of multiple steps.

Automatic filling of user forms with data from student application forms in PDF file.

As a result, the use of the platform has become much more comfortable for its users.

The customer was pleased with this cooperation and plans to outsource more development tasks to *instinctools upon receiving an additional round of funding.

Legacy System Modernization For an Environmental Company

Legacy System Modernization For an Environmental Company

How migrating from no longer supported VB6 to Java provided an environmental company with an app that seamlessly handles multiple customer requests at a time.

Challenge

Customers turned to us with the following problems:

  • They needed a convenient way to build complex queries in the database.
  • There were some performance problems with the client’s site. The system was running slowly in the case of multiple requests.
  • Customers needed to restrict access to the application using a White IP List where access would be allowed only to certain IP addresses.
  • There was a need to synchronize data with other databases.
  • It was necessary to construct graphs based on the processed data (e.g., “Number of bags per hour,” “Number of shipments per hour,” etc.).
  • Customers needed improvement of TimeSlot overview and scheduling. It was necessary to develop an electronic schedule (organizer) enabling the reserving of time for unloading and servicing of trucks with bottles.
  • They needed the ability to obtain additional user data from LDAP.

Solution

The problem was solved in the following way:

  • To enable easy construction of complex queries in the database, we suggested and implemented the use of Querydsl.
  • We optimized and used cache data to solve the performance problem and improve the operation speed when there are multiple requests.
  • To restrict access to the application, we implemented Interceptor for requests intercepting and filtering (White IP List and Whitelist for paths).
  • We implemented a file manager based on Qdrive.
  • To construct graphs on the basis of processed data, we used an additional module of chart.js.
  • We developed a data model and implemented basic logic for CRUD operations in accordance with business requirements (frontend and backend sides).
  • We developed Time Slots Overview – an electronic schedule (organizer) to reserve the unloading time of the machine with bottles, featuring marking of fields “reserved time” / “available for reservation time” / “unavailable for reservation time” by different colors. The mechanism takes into account the overlap of reserved periods, and automatically suggests the nearest free time, if the time the customer has chosen for reservation is already taken. After reservation, the customer can view its details at any time.
  • We created jobs or scheduling tasks for processing the scheduled data.
  • We developed a variety of services for the system, for example, MailService – a shared service to send e-mails.
